One of the most talented actresses of the new generation has appeared on the lists of the most influential people in Hollywood for several years. He has already won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA statuette. – I’m just getting started – says the star celebrating its 32nd birthday today with a cheeky smile.
Easy Girl (2010)
As for many stars, Emma Stone’s career began with unrefined comedies. Her screen debut was “Supersamiec”, in which she played the lover of one of the high school losers. After the even worse “Bunny”, the actress appeared in “Zombieland”, a comedy parody of horror films. Thanks to the creation of the militant Wichita Stone, she managed to get the first major role, beating in the race, among others Jennifer Lawrence. In “Easy Girl”, the future star played Olive, an exemplary student who starts a spiral of unexpected events with one innocent lie. Among not very sophisticated jokes, the creators managed to weave serious topics, such as slut-shaming and peer pressure, and Stone has managed to build a persuasive character that we sincerely support.
“The Help” (2011)
After Easy Girl, Agent Stone’s phone kept ringing. More comedy offers were coming to the actress. However, she decided to try her hand at a different convention. In the Oscar-winning “The Servants” she played Skeeter, a girl from a good home who dreams of a career as a journalist. To everyone’s surprise, he interviews the black maid Aibileen Clark and her friends. The women tell Skeeter about the experiences of a black woman in the American South in the 1960s. Although they are divided by everything, a sincere friendship begins to emerge between the protagonists, which will change the face of the whole town. Stone was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of an ambitious and empathetic, if slightly naive, girl. Ultimately, the actress had to wait another three years for the statuette. The film is available on VOD.pl.
“He loves, likes, respects” (2011)
Before Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone played a pair of talented artists in “La La Land”, they played lovers a few years earlier on the set of the comedy “Loves, Likes, Respects”. As they recalled later, as soon as they were introduced to each other on the set, they immediately recognized their soul mates. On the set, they loved to joke together, and the conversation topics never ended. “Loves, Likes, Respects” tells the story of an unusual friendship between heartbreaker Jacob Palmer (Gosling), who takes under his wing the loser Cal Weaver to help him regain his self-confidence. Stone played Cal’s daughter Hanna, who wins the heart of the eternal bachelor Jacob. The comedy can be watched on Netflix.
“Magic in the moonlight” (2014)
France, 1920s Stanley Crawford, an Englishman with a particular aversion to all sorts of spiritists and charlatans, goes on a mission to the Cote d’Azur to expose a fraud in which Sophie Baker is involved. The woman pretends to be a medium, wrapping every man around her finger. Stanley quickly discovers that his skeptical approach may be insufficiently shielded from the charismatic Sophie. When Emma Stone found out about the film, she immediately went to the casting. One of the reasons was Colin Firth – as a huge fan of the actor, she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet him. Despite the 30-year difference, the actors quickly found a common language and managed to create on-screen chemistry. Apparently, the sessions of recreating scenes from “Bridget Jones’s Diary”, which the actress knows by heart, helped in this. The duo can be watched on VOD.pl.
Parallel to Woody Allen’s comedy, the actress worked on the film “Birdman”. The idea was born in the mind of Alejandro González Iñárritu, after he decided to watch Tim Burton’s “Batman” years later. For Michael Keaton, the role of a superhero turned out to be both a blessing and a curse – it gave the actor international fame and labeled him. In Birdman, the actor faces the past, playing the hero of the Hollywood comic book superhero series, who tries to prove that he can do much more. In a surreal and mesmerizing film (made with a minimum number of assembly cuts), Stone played the daughter of the main character, Sam. The actress gave a show of the workshop, proving that she can go from laughter to sobbing in a split second. “Birdman” is available at VOD.pl.
“La La Land” (2016)
In the Oscar-showered musical, Emma Stone has returned to her roots. Before making her screen debut, she performed in the theater from the age of four. Her slightly hoarse voice (the effect of an illness she suffered in her early childhood) provided her with many musical parts. After moving to Los Angeles, Stone left the theater to focus on a film career, but returned to the stage a few years later. It was during one of the Broadway plays in which she played that Damien Chazelle noticed her. After the performance, the director offered her the role of Mia – an aspiring actress who sets out to conquer Hollywood. Stone saw a younger version of herself in the heroine. Her creation was awarded an Oscar.
“War of the sexes” (2017)
The story of the legendary 1973 tennis match against Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell), former champion dreaming of coming back to the top, and leader of the world rankings, Billie Jean King (Stone). The struggles of athletes, which have grown into a clash of two different visions of the world, were watched by millions of viewers around the world. Stone faithfully recreated the character of the legendary tennis player – she watched interviews for hours to learn her facial expressions and gestures.
One of the most underrated Netflix productions in recent years. Two strangers, Annie (Stone) and Owen (Jonah Hill), are testing out a next-generation antidepressant. It quickly turns out that not everything is going according to plan. “Maniac” delights not only with great photos, soundtrack and atmosphere straight from the movies from the 80s. Hill and Stone play the first fiddle here. They both show off their acting skills, taking on the roles of various characters – from petty thugs to … elves. It is impossible to take your eyes off the actress.
“The Favorite” (2018)
The story of an ailing and spoiled monarch, for whom two ladies of the court compete for favors, is one of the best films of recent years – it has a well-run plot, a brilliant setting and a phenomenal cast. Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone rise to the heights of their abilities. Stone as Abigail is as charming as he is repulsive, arousing sympathy and dislike. A well deserved Oscar nomination. While waiting for the two upcoming productions with Stone – “Babylon” (the director’s new film “La La Land”, co-starring Brad Pitt) and “Cruella” (the film remake of “101 Dalmatians”) – it is worth seeing again Lanthimos’ masterpiece . The movie is available on HBO GO.
