Scoop of the newspaper El Mundo on the negotiation of the Pulce Messi to stay at Barcelona. Partly satisfied, he left a year later.
A private box at the Camp Nou stadium for the whole family and for that of Luis Suarez; a private flight – always for the whole family – to go home at Christmas; a € 10 million bonus just for signing up; a 3% interest on the already pharaonic salary to compensate for the losses of the pandemic; a termination clause of only € 10,000 to be free to leave when and how he wants.
These are just some of the claims of Leo Messi two years agoat the time of renewing with Barcelona (and while he was buying a house in Milan, in the same street as the Inter headquarters, and his silhouette appeared on the Duomo), the negotiation ended the following year in tears – if not of crocodile, little we miss it – and with the move to Paris Saint-Germain, revealed exclusively Tuesday evening from El Mundo.
These were just some of the parameters that the Argentine claimed to include in his contract of 74.9 million euros net per year in the summer of 2020. The Spanish newspaper published a series of email exchanges between Leo’s father and agent Jorge Messi, his lawyers and former president Josep Maria Bartomeu. El Mundo got hold of it by analyzing the Baragate investigation and also promises further revelations about two other stars of the Catalan team, Gerard Piqu and Neymar.
Returning to Messi, Bartomeu had accepted the conditions imposed by the Messi family, except that of lowering the termination clause from 700 million euros to 10,000 euros – in practice to release the attacker while continuing to pay him -, and to subordinate the payment of the 10 million club return bonus to pre-pandemic revenue.
These were the differences that led to the breakdown of relations and the sending of the now famous burofax in which Leo asked to leave the club where he had been all his life. The negotiations had started on 11 June 2020 and, according to El MundoMessi he asked for a three-year period with the possibility of a unilateral extension by the player himself. In exchange, he would have accepted a 20% reduction in fixed salary in the 2020/21 season marked by Covid, but then demanded a 10% recovery in each of the following two seasons, cwith interest of 3% per year. And that these interests also covered the loyalty bonus already included in his contract.
