“The presumption of innocence is a very important principle. Eva Kaili is not in Strasbourg and she cannot defend herself or negatively influence »the vote. This was stated to Adnkronos by Dorien Rookmaker, Dutch MEP of the Ecr group, one of the two abstentions on today’s vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the dismissal of Kaili, arrested by the Belgian authorities for suspected corruption, from the position of vice president. “We have to be careful in a situation like this. I know going against the crowd can be dangerous, but it’s the right thing to do at the moment,” adds Rookmaker. Out of 628 valid votes, 625 voted yes to Kaili’s dismissal, 2 abstained (Rookmaker and Joachim Kuhs of Alternative fuer Deutschland, of the ID group) and one voted against. We are talking about the Croatian of the Non-Enrolled Mislav Kolakusic, who in December 2021 was sanctioned by Parliament for violating health regulations, which required anyone accessing Parliament premises to show the green pass. In a letter to colleagues in October 2020, he defined Covid-19 as a “cold”. “This decision takes effect immediately. We will continue to cooperate fully with the relevant national law enforcement, judicial and national authorities,” European Parliament President Roberta Metsola wrote on Twitter. To revoke the office of vice-president of the Chamber in Kaili, the conference of the presidents of the political groups of the European Parliament activated the procedure foreseen by article 21 of the regulation, for which a majority of three fifths of the votes expressed, representing at least three political groups.
