PLOT THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE
The Girl From Plainville is an American miniseries created by Liz Hannah (The Dropout) And Patrick Macmanus (Dr. Death). The crime drama traces the events that led to the death of Conrad Roy and the conviction for manslaughter of his girlfriend, Michelle Carter, brought to the screen by Colton Ryan (Little Voice) and by the Golden Globe nominated for The Great Elle Fanning.
An unprecedented case that caused quite a stir in the United States and was investigated by an article by Jesse Barron for Esquire, 18-year-old Michelle Carter has been accused of instigating her boyfriend, with whom she had a platonic relationship, to commit suicide, simply via text messages. A frail young man, Conrad Roy III committed suicide in July 2014 by inhaling carbon monoxide after a long series of text messages and phone calls with Michelle. Analyzing the millions of messages that the two young people have exchanged in five years, the investigators believed that Michelle inevitably encouraged the extreme gesture of Conrad, who was already suffering heavily from depression.
The trial of Carter, which ended in 2019, mobilized public opinion and divided the country between guilty and innocent. The painful affair also had strong repercussions on the families of the two boys. In the miniseries, Chloë Sevigny (We Are Who We Are) plays Lynn Roy, Conrad’s mother, who begins to get suspicious about Michelle and wonders what role she really played in the story. They are added to her Norbert Leo Butz (Bloodline), Dear Buono (Stranger Things) And Kai Lennox (Unbelievable).
CURIOSITY ABOUT THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE
The Girl From Plainville is based on an article by Esquire in which the journalist Jesse Barron traces the events that led to the death on 13 July 2014 of the eighteen-year-old Conrad Henri Roy III and subsequently to the conviction for manslaughter of his girlfriend, the seventeen-year-old Michelle Carter. The story, much debated in the United States, has become known as “The case of suicide by message”. Carter, in fact, was accused of encouraging Roy to take his own life in the numerous text messages sent to the boy. Barron and documentary maker Erin Lee Carr contributed to the miniseries as production consultants. The protagonist Elle Fanning was also the executive producer.
The real case of Conrad Henri Roy III’s suicide occurred in Mattapoisett, a city in Massachusetts, while Michelle Carter is originally from Plainville. The miniseries, on the other hand, was shot in Savannah, Georgia.
