The title Motherland could not be more suitable for this eighth episode of The Handmaid’s Tale 5 which shows motherhood in all its forms and turns the tables on the table once again, leading to the fall of Serena and the true rebirth of June. An exciting, reflective episode, an episode made of words, of looks, certainly more static than the previous one (which, at the moment, we consider the most beautiful of the entire season) that started the real turning point of the plot of this series. Serena is in prison, without her child and seeing her desperate and helpless is a real shock since we are used to seeing her in a completely different guise. Now, however, Noah’s new mother has turned into a real handmaid whose baby is taken away and she is forced to live in total imprisonment.
It is unsettling to see to what extent someone’s life can be revolutionized and how one can pass, in an instant, on the other side of history, from antagonist to heroine, from executioner to victim. Seeing her lean on her enemy June of her, the only person she has left in her life, is truly beautiful and it is just as beautiful and shocking to see a June that she does not forgive but gives advice on how to live. from prisoner to her own executioner. “We are not friends” June reminds Serena even though in the last episode of the series we all believed in a rapprochement between the two. Now, however, June brings us back down to earth and does the same with her husband, Luke who makes it difficult for him to have abandoned her for seven years and not done enough to save her, neither her nor her daughter Hannah.
The relationship between June and Luke is totally undermined in this episode and all the contrasting points emerge between the two who, by now, go on on different tracks. It’s very nice when he tells her: “Nicole and I will never be enough for you”, nothing more true since the character played by Elisabeth Moss, by now, cannot reintegrate into her old life, after Gilead has become a ‘ other person and turning back is impossible.
And then there’s Lawrence and his beautiful repentance speech about creating Gilead that makes him, once again, one of the most interesting and mysterious characters in this series.
And the episode’s ending? Wonderful. June receives the call from Tuello that she found her daughter Hannah and is ready to take her away from Gilead. Thus, the woman, in the grip of infinite joy, begins to run wearing a light that she had not worn for many years. And seeing it from this perspective was really nice. The continuous?
