the Holy See has not named his successor. Here are all the hypotheses

RIETI – At 17 o’clock yesterday, Monsignor Domenico Pompili took possession of the chair of San Zeno, becoming bishop of the Church of Verona. “But the link with Rieti will not dissolve”, assured Bishop Domenico at the end of the inauguration mass, thanking the Rieti authorities, religious and faithful present in Verona. And from 5pm yesterday, the diocese of Rieti became a vacant seat. A condition that cannot last more than 8 days, a period in which the Holy See can appoint an apostolic administrator. After this time in vain, the college of consultors – the only body that remains in office after the bishop’s departure – will have to elect a diocesan administrator, or a priest from the diocese of Rieti to carry out ordinary administrative functions.

Functions. He is a sort of ad acta commissioner who has limited powers, he cannot introduce changes or confer offices or assignments, but he governs the diocese until a new bishop or apostolic administrator is appointed. Both hypotheses at the moment remain viable. The Holy See could lean towards a young bishop as it was for Pompili seven years ago or choose an apostolic administrator such as Bishop Domenico was for the diocese of Ascoli Piceno or as it was for Monsignor Gianrico Ruzza for Porto-Santa Rufina of which merged with the diocese of Civitavecchia, he became bishop.

The day. It will be the passing of days to clarify the uncertain future of the diocese of Rieti, which still has yesterday’s long day in its eyes and heart. “The presence of Monsignor Pompili in Rieti during these years has been significant not only from the point of view of faith, moral and spiritual support but also concrete and planning with respect to the many initiatives that the province is implementing – comments from Verona, the Mayor of Rieti, Daniele Sinibaldi – It is a loss, but we will try to maintain relations as much as possible. He was a very important person. With him we were able to bring out the spirit of the Holy Valley and the theme of Franciscanism, in a more structured way than in previous years and his appointment as coordinator of the Centenaries by the CEI is a further element to continue to collaborate with him and continue the work started ».

“Today (yesterday, ed) is a day with a sweet and bitter taste – adds the president of the Province, Mariano Calisse – because on the one hand we are happy for the important role played by Don Domenico, and on the other, we lose a fundamental figure for the whole province that has been able to collaborate on important issues such as reconstruction, giving a real turning point and not just in words. His collaboration was decisive for the reopening of Palazzo Aluffi and to bring the university back to the center. We hope that whoever arrives will be an important person ». “Undoubtedly Pompili in Rieti leaves a void of vision, project and inclusion that I believe we will feel in the coming days, so I hope there will be a solution that is adequate”, declares the regional councilor Claudio Di Berardino before entering the Cathedral of Verona, full of civil and religious authorities and many faithful. All ready to support Don Domenico as he takes his first step into a new city and asks himself in front of a moved and silent crowd: «What do I aim for? Something simple and within everyone’s reach: I would like to learn to believe, as the Lutheran theologian Bonhoeffer argued, to rediscover the breath of life which is God ”.
