The popular superhero, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, will be at the center of a journey into the unknown of the Multiverse. Alongside Cumberbatch we find Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Sheila Atim, Adam Hugill, with Michael Stühlbarg and Rachel McAdams. The director is Sam Raimi while the screenplay is written by Michael Waldron, the lead writer of the TV series Lokiavailable on Disney +.

Welcome to the Multiverse

In July 1963, Doctor Strange made his first appearance in the issue Strange Tales of the Marvel comic number 110, by the artist Steve Dikto and the writer Stan Lee. However, it took 53 years before Strange, the Lord of the Mystical Arts, was welcomed as a superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a film entirely dedicated to him. Doctors Strange (2016).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the second film dedicated to the superhero, in cinemas from 4 May, pushes the pedal of fantasy towards darker and more disturbing atmospheres. And it is as if the prophecy that the Ancient uttered to him at the beginning of the first film came true: “If I had to tell you everything, you would run away from here screaming in terror”. At the direction of the sequel we find, five years later, a master of terror and wizard of the thrill: Sam Raimi.

Raimi is no stranger to superhero movies. In 1990 he directed and produced Darkman while a few years later he was behind the camera for the first trilogy dedicated to Spiderman. But what prompted him, 15 years later, to return to the genre? “When producer Kevin Feige announced he wanted to bring horror elements to the Doctor Strange story, I realized I couldn’t say no,” recalled Raimi.

“The project was interesting and I couldn’t miss it. Horror and suspense have always been the key, funny, of my cinema. I got interested in Strange first of all because he is a wizard. Growing up, I myself was a magician for children’s parties and weddings. I really like creating illusions, ”he added.

Passionate about comics since he was a kid, Raimi has always used the language of comics in his works. His trademark is extreme close-ups, tilted angles and quick edits. To give a hint of what the Multiverse of Madness will be is the director himself: “In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness I face a journey through different realities of the Multiverse “.

For the uninitiated, the Multiverse it is made up of infinite parallel universes. Each universe everything that already exists but in a different reality. Imagine many different versions of ourselves living situations different from the reality we know and leading lives very far from the ones we live.

With the introduction of the character of America Chavez, capable of traversing different universes, Doctor Strange’s Multiverse in the Multiverse of Madness appears more complicated than ever. “In the past, in the Marvel movies we have hinted at the Multiverse. Now we’re exploring it in a new way, ”said executive producer Eric Hauserman Carroll. “Stephen Strange will open it up for us, breaking all physical and metaphysical rules”.
