The Northman, Alexander Skarsgård on shocking sequence: “It was primal”

Alexander Skarsgård is the protagonist of the new film by Robert Eggers, The Northman. The Swedish actor told Empire magazine about the intense work done on the set and the sensations he never felt before. Skarsgård plays Hamlet, the protagonist engaged in avenging his murdered father.

The actor recounted the difficult experience of The Northman and one particular sequence it required 30 takes:“It was the end of a very long and complex scene of Viking berserkers breaking into a Slavic village. The choreography was really difficult, with all these elements, with 50 people fighting at the same time, the extras, the horses … making it perfect is it was a real feat “.

And then Skarsgård recounted a gruesome detail: the moment when he had to bite out an enemy’s throat:“That climax, where I rip an enemy’s throat and howl at the Moon … it was primal. I got rid of everything. I was exhausted and I think it shows in the shot too. I was a wreck, really a wreck”.

The Scandinavian star has been craving for years a film about the Vikings:“It was a difficult act to follow. So many things I could have said yes to a couple of years ago. I feel a bit lost, I don’t know what direction to take after having lived this experience that has definitely changed me. that changed most of the people who were on that mountain “.

The cast of the film also includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe.
Waiting for the release of the film here is a cover with Anya Taylor-Joy and dedicated to Eggers’ film.
