The situation in Ukraine, as in Georgia, just before the Russian attack

The Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation on Monday compared the current tensions around Ukraine with preparations for the 2008 war, in which Russian forces defeated the troops of neighboring Georgia, reports the Reuters Agency.

In a statement posted on its website, the intelligence service said Georgia’s then-president Mikheil Saakashvili “paid a high price” in the conflict. The comment was published at a time when Ukraine, the United States and NATO expressed concern about the movement of Russian troops near Ukraine and caused a fall in the ruble exchange rate. Moscow rejected reports that it might be ready to attack Ukraine, describing them as “inflammatory”.

Earlier, the Kremlin reported that the American media, which suggested that Russia was ready to attack Ukraine, had been used in a disinformation campaign.
