A legendary icon of French cinema, Catherine DENEUVE, Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement for the first red carpet of Venice 79 on the evening of August 31st. The Film Festival which has withstood practically everything (except the years of the Second World War 1943-1945 and in 1973, 1977 and 1978), including Covid, celebrates its first 90 years with an edition that promises to be full of great guests with particularly a spotlight for talent loved by younger audiences.
In the opening ceremony, with the godmother Rocio MUÑOZ MORALES, in addition to the director of the Exhibition Alberto Barbera and the president of the Biennale Roberto Cicutto, the complete juries starting with the one that will award the Golden Lion on 10 September, chaired by Julianne MOORE.
For the opening film, WHITE NOISE by Noah BAUMBACH are expected Adam DRIVER, Greta GERWIG, Jodie TURNER-SMITH. On September 1 for TAR by Todd FIELD, in competition, the divine Cate BLANCHETT arrives with Noémie MERLANT (the French actress of Portrait of a Lady on Fire) and for THE ORIGIN OF EVIL by Sébastien Marnier, at Extra Horizons, there is the beloved Laure CALAMY (Call my Agent, Best Actress in Horizons for Full Time at the last Venice Film Festival).
There is none for anyone on 2 September: it is the day of Timothée CHALAMET, now a super star, protagonist of BONES AND ALL by Luca GUADAGNINO together with Taylor RUSSELL, Mark RYLANCE, Chloe SEVIGNY. On the same day there is also Isabelle HUPPERT starring in LA SYNDICALISTE by Jean-Paul SALOMÉ (Horizons), while Shia Labeouf, the PADRE PIO by Abel FERRARA (Authors’ Days) is not confirmed at the moment.
Paul SCHRADER is the other Venice 79 Lifetime Achievement Lion and the award will be presented to the director of Taxi Driver, American Gigolò, The Card Collector on Saturday 3 September, followed by the out-of-competition preview of the new film MASTER GARDENER which he will bring to the red carpet Joel EDGERTON and Sigourney WEAVER; the same day for another Out of Competition film PEARL by Ti WEST which will bring the young Mia GOTH to the Lido and for the competition MONICA by Andrea PALLAORO with the transgender actress Trace LYSETTE.
On Sunday 4 September, glamor is ensured by Penelope CRUZ, protagonist of the film by Emanuele CRILESE in competition L’IMMENSITA’, the same day as THE WHALE by Darren ARONOFSKY with Brendan FRASER and another darling of young people, Sadie SINK (Stranger Things). Also on Sunday for Rebecca ZLOTOWSKI’S CHILDREN OF OTHERS there is Virginie EFIRA and for I EAT YOUR HEART by Pippo MEZZAPESA there is newcomer actress ELODIE. Monday 5 September is one of the most awaited days on the glam front: for the out-of-competition film DON’T WORRY DARLING by Olivia WILDE, the highly anticipated Florence PUGH and the ‘singer’ Harry STYLES arrive on the red carpet with her partner actress and director Wilde as well as to the rest of the cast with Chris PINE and Gemma CHAN, while accompanying the film in competition THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN by Martin MCDONAGH are Colin FARRELL and Brendan GLEESON and for AMANDA by Carolina CAVALLI at Orizzonti Extra there is Benedetta PORCAROLI.
Tuesday 6 September for THE SIGNOR OF THE ANTS by Gianni AMELIO there is the whole cast starting with the protagonist Luigi LO CASCIO with Elio GERMANO, Leonardo Maltese, Sara SERRAIOCCO and on the occasion of the Cartier glory to the filmmaker award Walter HILL to accompany his new film, out of competition, DEAD FOR A DOLLAR Christoph WALTZ and Willem DAFOE arrive. On the red carpet of THE ETERNAL DAUGHTER by Joanna HOGG, in competition, is Tilda SWINTON.
On Wednesday 7 September a super cast accompanies the competing film THE SON by Florian ZELLER: Hugh JACKMAN, Laura DERN and Vanessa KIRBY, while Casey AFFLECK and the young talent Noah JUPE arrive for DREAMIN’ WILD by Bill POHLAD, out of competition.
Thursday 8 September is the day of the awaited BLONDE by Andrew DOMINIK, in competition, with the disturbing Ana DE ARMAS in the role of Marilyn Monroe, while for SICCITÁ by Paolo VIRZÌ, out of competition, an Italian platoon arrives with Claudia PANDOLFI, Silvio ORLANDO, Valerio MASTANDREA, Sara SERRAIOCCO, Monica BELLUCCI, Vinicio MARCHIONI, Emanuela FANELLI. Friday, September 9, spotlight for CHIARA by Susanna NICCHIARELLI, in competition, with Margherita MAZZUCCO (the popular Lenù of my brilliant friend) and Andrea CARPENZANO; the same day for Oliver STONE who brings the documentary NUCLEAR out of competition and for Javier BARDEM starring with Chris ROCK in the short LOOK AT ME by Sally POTTER. The curtain falls on Venice 79 on Saturday 10 September with the night of the Lions: meanwhile, for the closing film there is a star: Alessandro BORGHI, protagonist of THE HANGING SUN by Francesco CARROZZINI.
Last but not least Federica PELLEGRINI: the super-champion of swimming is expected on the Lido among the winners of the Filming Italy Best Movie on 4 September immediately after her wedding with Matteo Giunta.
