TURIN – The 2022 FIFA World Cup kick-off took place in a venue that ensured a memorable experience for fans who flocked to Qatar from all over the world, Al Bayt stadium, located about 40 km north of the city of Doha, more precisely south of the city of Al Khor and near its airport. The work has the shape and appearance of a huge Qatari tent in the desert, “bayt al sha’ar”, a symbol of welcome and hospitality, with a capacity of 60,000 seats and an area of ​​200,000 square metres. The Al Bayt Stadium includes parks and green areas created to increase the livability of the city and offer families ample space to spend free time in the open air. The project includes the design, construction, completion and maintenance of the stadium ancillary buildings and the Energy Centre.

Technological innovation

The stadium, in addition to elements of sustainability, is also characterized by innovation in the construction phases, during which solutions of particular technical complexity and innovative design choices were used to guarantee ideal climatic conditions for players and spectators, in an environment characterized by high temperatures and strong temperature variations. The light colored outer surface reduces heat absorption, promoting efficient use of cooling systems. The stadium was designed to adapt its reception capacity to the actual needs of the country and, at the end of the World Cup, the third tier will be dismantled and donated to developing nations that need sports infrastructure.


Among the key aspects of the project, the use of cutting-edge materials with low environmental impact, with 20% of the construction materials coming from recyclable sources. The retractable canopy reduces energy consumption and allows sunlight to promote turf growth. The coordination between the various disciplines involved is also achieved through the use of modern technologies such as BIM to ensure an organized development of the project. The project adopts the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) standard, it is the first integrated system for assessing the sustainability of construction activities in the Middle East, which covers both environmental and social aspects along the entire life cycle of projects. In 2020, the project received two prestigious GSAS certifications (“Design and Build” and “Construction Management”), exceeding the requirements requested by the Client and FIFA and establishing itself as best practice in terms of sustainability and reduction of environmental impact.
