The titled Soviet athlete was in Australia when he suffered a heart attack, reports the Georgian website Sputnik. It was there that he worked as an athletics trainer from the 1990s.
Record after record. The legend of the triple jump is gone
For older fans, Wiktor Saniejew can associate him with the amazing competition in Mexico in 1968. The competitors were pushing the boundaries, breaking world records in triple jump time and again. First in the qualifying round, Giuseppe Gentile jumped 17.10 m, and later he even improved the record by 12 cm. Saniejew did not give up and improved this feat. Later he lost his record for a while, but finally ended the competition with a world record of 17.39 m. This result lasted for three years.
Saniejew was undefeated at the Olympics twice more. He also won gold medals in 1972 and 1976. Four years later, he became an Olympic vice-champion at the age of 35. He also had eight European titles to his credit, including six indoor titles. In 2013, it was introduced to the athletics Gallery of Fame.
Viktor Saniejew came from Sukhumi in Abkhazia. He died at the age of 76.
