According to the American politician, sanctions were imposed on Transadria Ltd. and its vessel. The name of the second company involved in the controversial project has not been disclosed.
The report for Congress on Nord Stream 2 and the sanctions imposed are in line with the requirements of the Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Act of 2019.
“With today’s decision, the US administration imposed sanctions on 8 people and identified 17 of their ships as property blocked under PEESA in connection with Nord Stream 2,” Blinken said in a statement.
The secretary of state also assured the continued cooperation with partners in Europe in order to “reduce the risk” of gas blackmail from Russia.
“We continue to work with Germany and other allies and partners to reduce the risks posed by the pipeline to Ukraine and the NATO and EU frontier countries, and to prevent harmful actions by Russia, including in the energy sphere,” Blinken wrote.
The sanctions are to result from reports of Russian troops gathering near the border with Ukraine. The Kremlin’s movements have raised concerns that Moscow may be planning some military action against its western neighbor.
Nord Stream 2
In mid-November, the German Federal Network Agency temporarily suspended the certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The reason is that the pipeline operator did not meet the legal requirements.
The Agency’s decision means that the operation of the controversial gas pipeline will not be possible for the time being. According to the law, the infrastructure operator must act according to German law. Meanwhile, Nord Stream 2 AG is registered in Switzerland.
The gas pipeline is opposed by Poland and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe due to concerns about using it as a gas blackmail tool against the countries of the region. However, the warnings addressed to the countries of Western Europe, especially Germany, are not taken into account.
As the German weekly “Der Spiegel” recently reported, the Bundesnetzagentur (the German Federal Network Agency) ignored the warnings issued by the Polish Energy Regulatory Authority regarding Nord Stream 2.
