Researchers from the University of Nottingham in the journal “Virulence” report that obtained from Apulian wickedness (Thapsia garganica) a compound called tapsigargin strongly blocks the multiplication of all SARS-CoV2 variants.
Interestingly, the milk juice of the Apulian lump, which after concentration is in the form of brown lumps, was used in antiquity, also later in the Middle Ages in medicine.
Scientists who decided to test the effect of the substance on the coronavirus already noted in previous experiments that Even in small doses, this substance triggers a strong response in the body against various virusesincluding SARS-CoV2.
Meanwhile, in new experiments, they first compared the cellular activity of different variants of the coronavirus – alpha, beta, and gamma. The delta variant multiplied 4 times faster than the alpha variant – and 9 times faster than the beta variant. At the same time, it was most efficient at moving to the next cells. As it turned out, infection with different variants at the same time usually gave a synergistic effect, i.e. the viruses accelerated each other’s replication.
However, researchers also have good news. In cell research all coronavirus variants were susceptible to tapsigargin. The substance effectively protected against infection and inhibited the already existing infection.
The study gave us a better insight into the nature of delta dominance. While we have shown that it is the most infectious and promotes the production of other viruses when co-infected, we are pleased as we have shown that tapsigargin is effective against all variants. Together, these results demonstrate the antiviral potential of tapsigargin for post-exposure prophylaxis and as a therapeutic substance.
