Telewizja Polska planned to launch its own set-top box to receive digital terrestrial television in the DVB-T2 / HEVC standard, but most likely it will not make it in time due to the lack of semiconductors – informs wirtualnemedia.pl.
From Q2 2022, older TV sets will need set-top boxes to receive digital terrestrial television in the DVB-T2 / HEVC standard. The new standard will also allow broadcasters to offer, inter alia, HbbTV hybrid television. This solution will allow users to take advantage of additional functions while watching TV – it will allow, among others, to access additional information and statistics during sports events or to purchase products directly from the TV.
Polish Television decided to release its own set-top box. The device would also offer additional functions – the ability to stop, play from the beginning or watch a program broadcast up to a week earlier and access to the TVP VOD collection.
As reported by “Virtual Media”, the decoder will not be available for sale for now, because there are no chips needed to make it. It is not even known whether TVP will manage to introduce the new DVB-T2 / HEVC broadcasting standard, which is scheduled for Q2 2022.
According to TVP estimates, even 2 million Polish households do not have a sufficiently modern TV set that would enable viewing digital terrestrial television in a new standard without having to buy a set-top box.
