Twist of the scene, the Earth is spinning faster and faster but the days are getting longer. How is it possible?

All the studies of the last ten years concerning our planet record data on the earth’s acceleration. This trend has shortened our days; in fact, in June 2022 we set a record for the shortest day of the last half century.

Despite this, however, a strange slowdown has recently been observed. A phase in total countertrend that showed scientists very long days.

But how does this thing work? Over the course of millions of years, Earth’s rotation has slowed down due to the frictional effects associated with the Moon-driven tides. This process adds about 2.3 milliseconds to the duration of every day, every century. A few billion years ago an Earth day lasted only 19 hours. In the last 20,000 years, however, another process has worked in the opposite direction, accelerating the Earth’s rotation. When the last ice age ended the melting of the polar caps reduced the surface pressure and the Earth’s mantle began to move constantly towards the poles.

Now, despite the Earth having reached its shortest day a few months ago, the long-term trajectory appears to have shifted from shortening to lengthening by 2020. This change is unprecedented in the past 50 years.

Scientists have speculated that this recent and mysterious change in the planet’s rotational speed is related to a phenomenon called “Chandler wobble” – a small deviation in the Earth’s rotation axis over a period of approximately 430 days. Observations from radio telescopes also show that the wobble has decreased in recent years and the two events could be linked.
