The European Commission is working to provide food couriers with “employment contracts”, reports Bloomberg.com. For platforms such as Uber Eats, Glovo or Bolt, this means large losses and announces that they may exit the European market.

According to the information obtained by Bloomberg’s journalists, the European Commission is working on a draft directive that would provide all employees “controlled by digital applications” with full-time employment (in Poland, this would mean employment based on an employment contract – ed. ). Until now, couriers delivering food, because we are talking about them mainly, have cooperated with Uber Eats, Glovo or Bolt on a self-employed basis.

The authors of the draft assume that the new regulations would provide employees with access to a number of social and health insurance as well as to employee rights resulting from the labor codes of individual countries. The draft assumes that employees would automatically acquire rights resulting from full-time work, and to change this, the employer would have to prove a different nature of employment.

The official proposal is to be presented this week, while the representatives of the giants are already critical of this idea. In their opinion, the new law may entail significant losses for them, which may even lead to their exit from the European market, and this, in turn, will have a negative impact on the labor market. As an example, they cite the situation in Spain, in which the Deliveroo platform withdrew from the market after the tightening of regulations, which resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs among couriers.
