Daniil Medvedev will challenge Novak Djokovic in the US Open final. Crowned in New York at the expense of the Serbian in 2021, the Russian followed a brilliant match to defeat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 3-6 6-3 in the semi-finals.
,I said you had to play at 11/10 level to have any hope of beating Carlos, I played at 12/10 level!“, welcomed the Russian, who will try to win his second major after denying Novak Djokovic a calendar Grand Slam in the final at Flushing Meadows two years ago.
Daniil Medvedev has since played in 2 finals at the Australian Open, losing to Rafael Nadal in 2021 and Novak Djokovic in 2022. So this is the third New York final he is preparing to play on Sunday, his 5th at a Grand Slam, also the one he faced Rafael Nadal’s law in the final in New York in 2019.
ascending from second set
On Friday, after a very competitive first set where each player won their faceoff, Medvedev took a clear advantage. But Alcaraz did not give up. And it was he who grabbed the only break in the third set to revive his actions after a forgettable second round.
The spectacle put on by both players continued on an exceptionally qualitative basis, with Alcaraz, like Medvedev, bringing back unplayable balls. And despite these heroic defences, the victory points increased several times (45 for the Spaniards, 38 for the Russians). But Daniil Medvedev was more effective in the fourth set, erasing six break points while converting his second opportunity in the set to lead 4–2.
So he has one match left against Novak Djokovic to lift the trophy. ,What challenge does this match represent? I’m playing against a guy who has 23 Grand Slam titles, and I have one… Like today, I have to play better than myself if I want to have a chance“, the Russian concluded.
