Vaccine effectiveness is declining – new report from Italy

Six months after being fully vaccinated against Covid-19, the vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing infection drops from 95 to 82 percent, the Italian Institute of Healthcare said in a report. It also recorded a high percentage of hospitalizations and deaths among unvaccinated people.

The report, released Saturday, emphasized that after more than six months, the decline in vaccine effectiveness applies to all age groups.

In addition, in an epidemic monitoring report, the national institute announced that in the last month, half of those hospitalized, 64 percent of intensive care patients, and 45 percent of those who died from Covid-19 were people who had not received a single dose of the vaccine.

In the period from the beginning of October to the first week of November, more than 50,000 infections were recorded among the unvaccinated, or 40 percent of all cases, it reported. 47 percent of those who tested positive in the last six months were vaccinated with two doses.

3 percent of those infected are people who have not been fully vaccinated, and about 9 percent are those who took it more than six months ago.

There were also 537 cases of infections among those who received the third dose.

After two doses of the vaccine, more than 84 percent of the Italian population is over the age of 12.
