Black Friday is a colloquial term for the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States. Many stores offer heavily promoted sales at discounted prices and often open very early, sometimes as early as midnight or even on Thanksgiving. However in the US, these promotions are truly grand and real. It is different in Poland, and companies often deceive customers by increasing prices. MediaMarkt, which is already cheating, be an example and a warning!

MediaMarkt is already cheating
Black Friday is only in 2 days, and some companies implement whole weeks of offers for clients, eg Black Week. This has little to do with the US shopping holiday. The offers promoted by stores are often unattractive and sometimes even intended to deceive the customer.

This is the case with the latest promotion at MediaMarkt. The AirPods Pro headphones cost PLN 919 a few days ago. The store increased their price to PLN 1158and a few hours later he lowered it to PLN 949. In this way, the “reduction” amounts to PLN 219, which the company informs about at the price of the product.
For customers who do not follow prices, this offer may seem very attractive. However, kickers and Twitter users quickly caught the scam. Finally, the customer who wants to buy the equipment in the promotion will pay PLN 30 more than before the start of the marketing campaign. Interestingly, even at the time of writing this article, the offer is still on the store’s website.

One of the Twitter users also noticed a Media Expert scam. The Philips TV set a dozen or so days ago cost PLN 3999. Currently, the store wants to sell it for PLN 4,999, after the alleged reduction from PLN 5,699. Be careful with your money and such “promotions”. In this case, there is much more to lose than gain.
Black Friday scams in Poland are nothing new
Companies operating in Poland are great at “making customers into a balloon” on Black Friday. Let us recall some high-profile examples from the last few years that will be a warning to buyers:
- In 2015, Media Expert launched the “Night Discounts” campaign. The offer started at 19:00 on Black Friday. At first glance, everything looked OK to people who didn’t follow the prices. However, when the customer waited for days for a discount on the product, he could see that a few minutes after 7pm the price had not changed. There was only an annotation about the supposed old, higher price.
- Take Cortland as an anti-example, which in 2017 showed strongly inflated base prices of products, so that the customer thought that the price reduction was greater.
In order not to be deceived, you need to keep track of the prices of the desired products on the Internet. A website fakefriday.pl was even created to facilitate the detection of scams on Black Friday.

If you discover a fraud, it is worth reporting it to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection. You can write an e-mail there or call the hotline, which is open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Let’s not let the stores deceive the customers!
