The announcement that Justin Lin would leave the direction of “Fast and Furious 10” shocked fans of the film saga starring Vin Diesel. The filmmaker, responsible for five chapters of the franchise had returned to direct in “Fast and Furious 9”, the most recent production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin’s departure was due to disagreements with Vin Diesel and, consequently, with the studio responsible, Universal.
Justin Lin left the project a few days before they started filming the new feature. Sources reported that changes to the script and the difficulty in dealing with the protagonist and also producer Vin Diesel led the filmmaker to give up.
The director was dealing with various problems involving the production, from the lack of an actor for one of the villains to the change of location due to the war in Ukraine.
On April 23 this year, Lin and Diesel had a big disagreement. According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, there was a meeting in which the protagonist brought new ideas for the film, but the director did not agree with what was being presented. The meeting ended with doors slamming and, according to one of the sources, Lin would have said: “This movie is not worth my mental health”.
The NY Daily News reported that Vin Diesel’s lack of professionalism on set was the last straw for Lin. According to reports, the actor does not memorize his own lines and is always late for recordings.
In addition, the actor placed himself in a dominant role in the saga, also interfering in the creation process. Sources reported that the scripts must be approved by the star, who also adds wild ideas, which must be accepted by the director. But nothing prevents him from changing what he wants and changing the script again.
Contacted by The Hollywood Reporter, Universal said that “the creative differences that led to Justin Lin’s departure are tied to the studio, not the producers, cast or crew.”
On April 25, an agreement was signed for Lin to step down from directing the film, but continue as a producer. Even so, he gave up a salary that could range from $10 million to $20 million.
However, the team members who worked with the filmmaker during the ninth film could continue in production, something that was well accepted by both the studio and the now-ex-director.
The next day, Lin took to social media to announce the project’s departure. “With Universal’s support, I’ve made the difficult decision to step back as director of ‘Fast & Furious 10,'” he wrote, also thanking his cast and crew for their support and expressing pride in helping to build “the most diverse franchise in history.” of the cinema”.
According to information from Variety, who will assume the role of director of the new film is Louis Leterrier from “Trick of a Master” (2013) and “Wrath of the Titans” (2012).
Vin Diesel also had issues with The Rock, who opted out of the film series.
