What happened to Star Trek 4? Zoe Saldana: “Everyone ready to come back!”

Surprise and bewilderment when, just over a month ago, Paramount eliminated Star Trek 4 from the list of his next releases. Exit of the director and abandonment of the first script due to contractual problems, at the basis of the postponement indefinitely. But the cast is eager to return and the project is “absolute priority”.

It was late September when Paramount removed Star Trek 4 from its slate of releases, which it was scheduled for December 2023. The cause was the loss of director Matt Shakman in favor of the future Fantastic 4 of Marvel Studios. But the major is not discouraged and promptly started looking for a replacement director after declaring the film a top priority. The cast remains the same as in the previous trilogy, promises producer JJ Abrams, and that very cast is now said to be super eager to return to the franchise.

He takes his place Zoe Saldanawho during Deadline’s 20 Questions podcast assured: “We were in touch with JJ and were trying to see if we could see anything as early as last fall, but I don’t think it was possible. Maybe it was just a rough plan, the fact that we started working on it even then. The truth is, we couldn’t get a whole cast and crew together, but I think there’s something else going on as well. I only know that we are all aligned: there is nothing that interests us more than being able to return“.

That something more mentioned by Saldana in reference to the momentary shipwreck could also be the abandonment of the original script of Star Trek 4, created by the showrunners of The Rings of Power. The film would have featured Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk team with his father, Chris Hemsworth in the role of George Kirk, in the midst of an adventure against a new villain. Paramount scrapped that script after contract negotiations proved problematic. But Paramount President Brian Robbins continues to reassure when this IP is essential for the studios. It therefore remains a priority for everyone, despite the setbacks along the way.
