What helps prevent dementia? New research by scientists

18 people aged 55-85 who snored at night participated in the study. One third of them had mild cognitive impairment and another one had Alzheimer’s disease.

Subjects wore respiratory, heart rate, and snoring devices while they slept. A series of tests of memory, executive function and concentration were also performed.

Scientists have observed that the maximum respiratory rate during periods of undisturbed use sleep it allowed to distinguish healthy people from people with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment.

Then participants used a CPAP anti-snoring device at night. Four weeks later, the cognitive tests were performed again.

The results of healthy subjects and those with mild cognitive impairment did not differ. While people with Alzheimer’s disease did not show such improvement, they said they saw improvement on their own.

A salutary dream

“This indicates that better sleep improves cognitive function in people with mild cognitive impairment, which in turn may slow the development of dementia. However, as neurogenesis is a slow process, people with Alzheimer’s disease may take longer to experience visible changes. Good sleep quality is essential for the brain to trigger its cleanup processes and get rid of toxins, ‘the authors write.
