After sharing on social media, world famous model Bella Hadid, who has been suffering from Lyme disease for some time, told what is Lyme disease? Causes of Lyme disease, what are the symptoms? Questions are explored.
What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected tick. Lyme disease is usually accompanied by rash, fever, headache, and fatigue. Early diagnosis increases treatment success in patients with Lyme disease.
Lyme disease or borreliosis is a disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and a similar bacterium, usually transmitted to humans through the bite of Ixodes ricinus (locust).
Although the disease can occur in various forms, the first symptom is redness on the skin of the area where the tick was bitten.
This disease can be treated with antibiotics. In some patients, symptoms of the disease may persist for months or years after treatment. These symptoms may include muscle pain, arthritis, stiff neck, psychotic symptoms, neurological complaints, and extreme fatigue. It has also been found that bacteria cause cancer.
What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?
Target organs can be organs such as the skin, central nervous system, eyes, and heart. The disease causes symptoms such as fever, fatigue, nausea, flu-like symptoms, headache and stiff neck. Swelling, accumulation of fluid in the joints and difficulty in movement are seen.
Although the most descriptive finding in the development of the disease is a skin lesion called a “bull’s-eye rash (erythema migrans)”, this rash is not seen in every patient.
