The 2022 World Cup which took place in Qatar ended with Argentina’s success over France. The day after the final, during the December 19 episode of Stasera Italia, a Rete4 talk show hosted by Barbara Palombelli, the football competition is discussed with Piero Sansonetti, director of Il Riformista, rather critical of the matches played in Doha : “I am one of those who would never have played the World Cup in Qatar. As a young man I would not have played the World Cup in Argentina in 1978, during a terrifying dictatorship, given how they treated the opponents. There are different things about Russia 2018, there we can discuss… Do we want to talk about what civil rights are in Qatar? It’s a terrifying thing, we don’t know how they managed to conquer these world championships, to snatch them from the United States, which is a great power. Right up to the end – underlines Sansonetti – they wanted to insist, putting the cape on Lionel Messi. We don’t know if there have been 6-10-15 thousand deaths for the construction of stadiums, I’m quite indignant, I’m someone who follows football a lot”.
