It seemed that this match would not take place on the original date. Coronavirus decimated the Belenenses team, who wanted to surprise in the derby match against Benfica.
The Lisbon derby is scheduled for Saturday. The problem is that ten cases of coronavirus infection have been diagnosed in the Belenenses ranks. To make matters worse, the coach could not use nine other players, who were struggling with injuries or were paused for cards.
There was a risk that the Portuguese league game would be postponed. However, this did not happen.
The charges of coach Filipe Candido had to go onto the pitch, otherwise they would be punished with a forfeit. The team from Estadio Nacional do Jamor wanted to face adversity. On the day of the match, the daily “Diario de Noticias” reported that only seven players were fit to play.
Ultimately, Candido could field nine players, including two goalkeepers – Joao Monteiro could prove himself in a different role. There was not a single player on the Belenenses bench.
After all, Benfica’s coach, Lisbon, had the optimal line-up. Belenenses fans could not imagine a worse start to the match, as the Brazilian Kau scored an own goal in the first minute. Before the break, Benfica scored six more goals.
