Conversations about Trent Alexander-Arnold and his future role in midfield have been a permanent topic of his career since his Liverpool debut. Having moved into a full-back role after coming through the academy ranks as a midfielder, it’s no surprise that this has been a topic that has always haunted him.
The Liverpool academy graduate is blessed with technical ability and ball-playing skills as well as creativity that would make him the perfect candidate for a midfield role. Recently, Liverpool fans have seen this firsthand when Jurgen Klopp reversed course to play him in a more central position when the Reds were in possession.
Even more advanced is Gareth Southgate, who has used Alexander-Arnold exclusively in midfield while on international duty for England recently. In his most recent outing, Alexander-Arnold showed what he is capable of against Malta, producing a man of the match performance for the Three Lions.

Given the developments surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s role over the past six months, it would be no surprise to see him eventually be permanently moved into midfield in the coming season. At 25, she is now at the peak of her career and is clearly ready for a change.
This should be taken with a pinch of salt, but the latest transfer rumors surrounding Liverpool could also hint at Alexander-Arnold making a midfield change. According to Spanish outlet Depor, Liverpool are interested in Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremy Frimpong.
The Dutch international, who is teammates with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, has been one of the stars of Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen side, who are currently two points above first-place Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

Frimpong contributed an impressive 20 goals for Leverkusen last season, and he is already on 12 in 16 games in all competitions for Alonso this term. A very explosive player with one-on-one skills and the ability to bomb forward, Frimpong could be an excellent option for Liverpool on the right flank.
Under Alonso, he has played in a more advanced role as a wing-back, but in the past, he was tasked with playing as a full-back and also performed his diligent duties defensively. Bringing him in could give Liverpool a long-term solution to the right-back department and a reason to push Alexander-Arnold further up the pitch.
For years now, the argument for keeping Alexander-Arnold at right-back has been that there are few players who can do as good a job in that position as the Liverpool man. But Frimpong could be one of those few players, and that’s why Liverpool would be wise to make a move for one of Alonso’s favorite Leverkusen stars.
