Xhaka was red carded again, Liverpool failed! EFL Cup coverage

The EFL Cup semi-final match against Liverpool did not go well for Arsenal players from the beginning. Cedric Soares had to be replaced quickly, and although the Reds were not very active on the offensive, the visitors posed a threat under their own goal with simple mistakes. This was the case, among others, in the 12th minute of the match, when Aaron Ramsdale shot the ball straight at Roberto Firmino, who, however, failed to take advantage of it.

After another twelve minutes of the meeting, the Gunners again made a serious mistake. This time Granit Xhaka failed. After a good long pass from Andrew Robertson, the Swiss acted irresponsibly and fouled Diogo Jota who ran into the penalty area. Effect? A red card, which the midfielder could already get used to, because as an Arsenal player he was kicked out of the field for the fifth time. Moreover, he will not play in the upcoming North London derby, and the only Arsenal midfielders will most likely be Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The Reds, playing in the majority, did not impress. At times it was hard to get the impression that one of the teams was playing only partially, and in the first thirty minutes after Xhaka’s foul, Liverpool’s best opportunity was … Takumi Minamino’s unsuccessful cross, after which the ball slightly missed the goal.

In the 71st minute of the game we saw the first on-target shot in this match, and the Gunners were unexpectedly closer to scoring. After a good performance from Kieran Tierney, Bukayo Saka took the ball badly in the penalty area, which allowed Alisson to intervene effectively.

Until the end of the match, neither team was able to score. It is true that there were many shots in this match, but the accuracy is definitely – The Reds hit the goal only once with fifteen attempts. This was not what Minamino was able to do when the shot was fired from a few meters after Ramsdale’s intervention. The goalless draw can be enjoyed by the Gunners, who did not concede a goal playing in the weakening, and in a week’s return match they will play in front of their own audience.
