Zbigniew Boniek reacts to Szeliga’s words. “How many Legia has this championship?”

During the games of the Polish Premier League in the season 1992/1993 there was a so-called “Niedziela mirów” – at the very end of the competition, in the last round, Legia Warszawa won against Wisła Kraków 6-0, while ŁKS Łódź defeated Olimpia Poznań 7-1. Legia and ŁKS were fighting for the Polish championship then, and the high victories of both teams in quite strange circumstances aroused suspicions that there had been cases of corruption.

Although both results were eventually canceled by the Polish Football Association, and the championship fell to Lech Poznań, to this day the question of whether the matches were actually sold has not been fully clarified.

However, the words of Grzegorz Szeliga, a former footballer who represented Wisła Kraków in the 1992/1993 season, shed new light on the matter. In an interview with TVP Sport, he admitted that he had received money for selling a match with LegiaHe was also prompted by the fact that – as he himself said – he is dying of cancer and does not want to take the secret to the grave, he was also prompted by this controversial confession.

The former president of the Polish Football Association and UEFA vice-president Zbigniew Boniek referred to this declaration on Twitter, in a way encouraging further discussion on the matter.

“Well, how many of these Polish Champion titles have been won by Legia? A very timely question after my friend Szeliga’s ‘confession'” – asks Boniek. As he pointed out, the topic is extremely “hot” at the moment, and he would love to hear the opinion of “Military” fans in the case, as well as the position of the club authorities, which have not yet officially referred to Szeliga’s words.

Grzegorz Szeliga played for Wisła Kraków in the years 1993-1995. Interestingly, a bit earlier, in 1987-1988, he also performed for the Warsaw Legia. He ended his career in 2010 in the reserves of Dolcan Ząbki.
