Jamie Spears, the father of the singer Britney Spears, has decided to relinquish his 13-year role as trustee of his daughter’s estate. The singer’s lawyer informed the US media about it on Thursday.
“We are delighted that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have come to terms with the necessity to dismiss him,” said a lawyer for 39-year-old singer Mathew Rosengart, quoted by Reuters.
Citing the file on the singer’s request to remove her father from her custody, Reuters cites a written response from Jamie Spears’ attorney Vivian Thoreen, arguing that there were in fact no legal grounds for depriving Spears of the duties entrusted to him. She found the thesis that changing the curator in the singer’s best interest to be highly debatable.
“Nevertheless, while Mr. Spears is a constant target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter for his continued service as her probation officer is in her best interests,” the document signed by Thoreen said. For this reason, he is considering resignation.
In 2008, Spears’ father along with his then-attorney Andrew Wallet gained control of all aspects of Britney’s life, including an estimated $ 60 million fortune. The artist was then struggling with mental illness and addictions. For months, Britney Spears has been trying to free her from her tutelage.
Celebrity fans question the ethics and legality of the incapacitating care imposed on her and partially on her. They initiated a campaign under the slogan #FreeBritney. The singer has not been able to enjoy full freedom for 13 years. At that time, she released platinum albums, performed, among others on TV and in Las Vegas, but she had no control over the finances of any of these projects, emphasizes Reuters.
Judge Brenda Penny on Monday rejected a request by Rosengart’s attorney to postpone the probation hearing scheduled for September 29 to August 23 in order to settle the case as soon as possible in the interests of Britney Spears.
