Alexandria Daddarioformerly of Percy Jackson, joins the author of the series Rick Riordan in giving voice to Leah Jeffriesthe young actress recently announced to play Annabeth Chase in the Disney + series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. On May 10, Riordan published a blog post in which she condemns social media users to “bully and molest a child” because she is black and she will play a character described as white in Riordan’s books. Recall that Daddario played Annabeth, the demigod daughter of Athena, in both live-action Fox movies: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: 2010’s The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: 2013’s Sea of Monsters.
“Leah Jeffries will be an amazing Annabeth!!! ” Alexandria Daddario tweeted in response to the allegations online. The tweet received more than 40,000 likes. “My TikTok has been banned. I guess all the people didn’t want me to be Annabeth or something, they literally deleted my entire account “Jeffries said in the video addressing his followers. “So now I don’t have a TikTok account anymore, but that won’t stop us!”
Rick Riordan’s thoughts through his blog
In a blog post titled “Leah Jeffries is Annabeth Chase“, Riordan wrote: “This post is specifically for those who have a problem with Leah Jeffries casting as Annabeth Chase. It’s a shame these posts need to be written, but they do… Leah brings so much energy and enthusiasm to this role, so much strength from Annabeth. She will be a role model for the new generations of girls who will see her as the kind of hero they want to be ”.
Rick Riordan has continued: “If you have a problem with this casting, however, talk to me about it. You have no one else to blame. Whatever else you take from this post, we should be able to agree that bullying and harassing a child online is inexcusably wrong. As strong as Leah is, as much as we have discussed the potential for this type of backlash and the intense pressure this role will bring, the negative comments she has received online are out of place. They have to stop. Now.”
Rick Riordan he also cited Disney’s corporate policy on nondiscrimination. All while remembering who the company is “Engaged in diversified and inclusive castings“. Open to “Qualified interpreters, regardless of disability, sex, race and ethnicity, age, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other basis prohibited by law”.
Leah Jeffries will co-star in the series with Walker Scobell (The Adam Project) as Percy Jackson. We will also find Aryan Simhadri (of Disney + Cheaper by the Dozen) in the role of Grover Underwood. Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been ordered for a series on Disney +.
