Queer as Folk: The new protagonists
Second star-and-strip remake of the seminal British series, Queer as Folk takes us to modern-day New Orleans, where the lives of a motley group of friends are turned upside down and changed by a tragedy: an apparent homophobic shooting inside Babylon, a queer nightclub. The group is formed by the Brodie brothers (Devin Way, Grey’s Anatomy) and Julian (Ryan O’Connell, Special), the first a charming boy who is afraid to commit and the other a passionate pop culture nerd suffering from cerebral palsy and ready for a little independence, children of the eccentric Brenda (Cattrall) and Winston (Ed Begley Jr., Young Sheldon), an emotionally distant father.
They are joined by Mingus (Fin Argus, The Gifted), a presumptuous high school student whose confidence belies lack of real-world experience; Ruthie (Jesse James Keitel, Big Sky), a party-going transgender who is struggling to grow up; Shar (the newcomer CG), a non-binary professor struggling with the difficult transition from punk to parenting; and Noah (Johnny Sibilly, Poses), a successful lawyer with a lot to hide. Together, they face the daily battle against discrimination, vulnerability, addiction, pain and the difficulties of fulfilling humanly and sentimentally.
Queer as Folk: Speaking the authors
The creator of the series Stephen Dunn (Little America) explained: “I wanted to create a groundbreaking new version of this show for this moment. Ours Queer as Folk is set in New Orleans, one of North America’s most distinctive queer communities, and I am immensely proud that the new series is comprised of an electrifying set of fresh characters that mirrors today’s global audience. If there is anyone being able to see Queer as Folk he will feel less alone or he will feel more supported and considered, we will have achieved the goal. In the true spirit of the original, our series does not escape the harsh reality of our community, but above all it is about people who live vibrant, vital and unapologetically queer lives. “
Executive Producer Russell T Davies added: “I am very proud of what we achieved in 1999, but in queer years, it was a millennium ago! As a community, we have radicalized, explored, liberated and found new worlds – with new enemies and new allies – and there was so much to say. Stephen created a new version of Queer as Folk so full of imagination, intuition and, most of all, joy, which I simply couldn’t resist. I thought it was time for the title to belong to a whole new generation. The 2022 series is more diverse, wilder, freer, angrier – everything a queer show should be. “
