At the Sala Pasolini in Salerno the homage in music

Friday 30 September 2022 intense day between cinema and music. It starts at 10.30 with the premiere of the section “The undertow of the wave / Matinée” dedicated to the screening of films for students: in the program “The dreamers” (directed by Bernardo Bertolucci; with Louis Garrel; Eva Green, Michael Pitt , Anna Karina, Jean Pierre Kalfon, Jean Pierre Léaud). Against the background of the Paris of ’68, the story of a love triangle that challenges every moral and every social convention. An iconic masterpiece capable of playing with quotes and giving them new life.

In the evening, at 9 pm, the Sala Pasolini will open the doors to the story about the Nouvelle Vague with the concert promoted by the Teatro Pubblico Campano “The Woman Next Door” by Rita Marcotulli with Roberto Gatto, Javier Girotto, Aurora Barbatelli, Ares Tavolazzi and Vince Embracing. Video story directed by Maria Teresa de Vito for an immersive experience. What will be offered to the public is an original tribute to cinema, and in particular to François Truffaut (“I 400 hits”, “Baci Rubati”, “Fahrenheit 451”) of the pianist Rita Marcotulli. The poetics of innocence, childhood, loneliness and melancholy. Truffaut’s filmography shows in filigree a genius that hinges on the fragility of the characters, on their infinite desire for love and freedom: an engine for Rita’s lyrical, romantic poetics, equally divided into the compositional moment and improvisations. The Roman composer and pianist Rita Marcotulli, defined by critics as “the lady in jazz”, will propose the 13 tracks of this incredible work: Le cinéma est le cinéma, Les 400 coups, Songs of innocence, Songs of Experience, Escape, Masse di Memoria , Musique en jeu, Les enfants s’ennuient le dimanche, Antoine Doinel, Arpeggio and Fuga, The Japanese Mistress, Que; Fragment (Of the third kind).

Saturday 1 October, at 11, we return to Palazzo Fruscione for the talk “Truffaut, the child who loved cinema” with Leonardo Acone (teacher of Children’s Literature, University of Salerno), Luca Tortolini (writer and screenwriter) and Victoria Semykina (illustrator). Introduced by Fabrizio Murino. Starting from the graphic novel by Tortolini / Semykina, Edizioni Kite, a dialogue on the childhood of the great French director between passions, escapes, restless adolescence and cinema as an absolute ruler.

THE EXHIBITION. If there is one point of view of the Nouvelle Vague that still amazes and fascinates, it is undoubtedly that of those who lived it on and off the film sets observing it through their own camera. And it is starting from some of those shots, many of them unpublished, that the city of Salerno with the Tempi Moderni Association, chaired by Marco Russo, pays homage to the aesthetics and iconography of the French cinematographic cultural movement, with the works of two great photographers: Raymond Cauchetier and Douglas Kirkland. Cauchetier was still photographer of directors such as François Truffaut, for the films “Tirez sur le Pianiste” (1960), “Jules et Jim” (1961), “Antoine et Colette” (1962), “la Peau Douce” (1963 ) and “Baisers Volés” (1968), Jean-Luc Godard, for the films “A’bout de souffle (1959) and” Une femme est une femme “(1960), and many other films by Jacques Demy, Jacques Rozier, Claude Chabrol, Agnes Varda, Bertrand Tavernier. Douglas Kirkland’s shots of Marilyn Monroe between the white sheets are memorable. Kirkland has immortalized more than 600 celebrities with his photos and was the still photographer of over 150 films (including “All Together Passionately” (1964); “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968); “Butch Cassidy” ( 1969); “My Africa” ​​(1985); “Titanic” (1997); “Moulin Rouge” (2000); “The Great Gatsby” (2011).

113 photographs will be exhibited (including 36 rare vintage prints from 1961 by Raymond Cauchetier, never exhibited before) that can be admired from 6.00 pm on 23 September and until 13 November in the evocative rooms of Palazzo Fruscione in the collective exhibition “Nouvelle Vague3” . The exhibition itinerary will be made even more complete by the photographic documents and video stories of the Archivio Luce Cinecittà and by the exciting illustrations by Victoria Semykina.

The corpus of the exhibition will be housed in the rooms located from the first to the third floor of the thirteenth century building, built on the remains of the ancient thermal building belonging to the Roman Salerno. In a path, with a chromatic guide in three colors, on the first floor (blue), in the hall adjacent to the one dedicated to cinema, concerts and talks, there will be the drawings made for the occasion, by Victoria Semykina that tell, on the one hand, the most evocative frames of the film “Lift to the gallows” by Louis Malle and on the other hand the histoire d’amour between Juliette Grecò and Miles Davis. And, again on the first floor, the walls of the left wing of the building will be “covered” by the drawings of the Russian artist and by the words of Luca Tortolini taken from the splendid, poetic story of the Parisian childhood by François Truffaut (“François Truffaut the child who loved cinema “) in the years in which he was preparing to become the director of the 400 Colpi, a story of which Tempi Moderni, in collaboration with Kite edizioni, created an original animated version, which will be looped in the adjacent room.

Further on, on the second (pink) and third (yellow) floors of the building, the works of Cauchetier, Kirkland and the photographs and documentary videos of Archivio Luce Cinecittà will be exhibited. Visitors will be accompanied by the texts edited, masterfully, exclusively, by Francesco Casetti, sterling professor of Humanities and Media and Film at Yale University.
