Bills, how the discount of 10 cents per kilowatt hour works if you reduce consumption

Starting last Saturday, 9 million Enel Energia customers who have energy supply contracts on the free market automatically participate, without any need to join, in a new initiative, called EssenzialMente, which saves 10 cents per kilowatt hour (the which cost these days is about 30 cents, but varies according to the power of the meter and consumption) not consumed.

This is not an initiative with commercial purposes, but is rather aimed at reminding customers that we are heading towards a difficult winter and that reflecting on a more efficient and balanced model of consumption can allow them to spend less (given the energy prices ) but also to feel less of the impact in the moment (unfortunately not so remote) in which rationing starts that reach household consumption. Moreover, it is probable that other utilities could take action along the lines of what Enel has done to encourage their customers to pay attention to consumption.

Bonus in 2023 bills, savings of 60 euros per quarter

The initiative of the group led by Francesco Starace – also the result of the work of the new EnelX Global Retail division headed by Francesco Venturini – provides for the premium on saved consumption to be returned by the second bill of 2023 and is valid, for now, on the consumption of October, November and December 2022 compared with the same period of 2021. Starting from mid-November, the utility customer will be able to check on the Enel website, in the customer area, how much he is consuming and how much he must reduce consumption in order to obtain the discount . The contribution, it must be said, is triggered only when the price of electricity in Italy (Pun) exceeds the threshold of 400 euros per megawatt hour, a threshold that was actually exceeded in the months of June, July, August and early September.

The real economic advantage is not so much and only that linked to the bonus, but derives above all from the lower energy consumed: it is calculated that in a quarter the overall average savings of a family between bonuses and lower consumption can reach 60 euros, of which 10- 15 euros for the prize and 40-45 euros for lower costs for the energy saved.

How do you save

But what needs to be done to really reduce your consumption compared to those at the end of 2021? There are virtuous behaviors that everyone can adopt at home, many of which do not require particular sacrifices, others that instead require a greater commitment on the part of families. Some suggestions were contained in a study by Enea of May 2022. For example, going from 1 washing machine per day to 1 every 2 days: -52 euros with -5% annual consumption. This saving, however, has increased by 25%, ie about 65 euros, since Enea published its report due to the increase in energy prices. And this also applies to the other actions: how to go from 2 dishwashers a day to 1 dishwasher a day: -74 euros (91 euros with today’s value) to -8% consumption per year. And then turn off an incandescent light bulb for one hour a day – 9 euros a year; turn off the oven in the last 10 minutes of cooking: -14 euro per year, -1.5% of consumption. Avoid standby light and TV and any decoders, consoles: € 5 savings per year, -0.5% consumption. Enel, for example, also recalls the importance of using heat pumps instead of gas boilers or induction hobs, obviously for those who are perhaps doing renovations or changing appliances.
