Before the start of Wednesday’s Champions League matches, six teams were sure to participate in the 1/8 finals. They were joined by Sporting, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
Two teams, Manchester United and Chelsea, secured their promotion on Tuesday. Earlier appearances in the knockout stages were guaranteed by Bayern Munich and Juventus, as well as Liverpool and Ajax Amsterdam, who rivaled on Wednesday. Both of these clubs won their matches and, apart from leaving the group, they also won first place in them.
The Reds defeated Porto 2-0 after goals from Thiago (a beautiful timed shot) and Mohamed Salah. In the Milan match against Atlético Madrid, the Italians showed better, which means that they will also join the fight to leave the group. In two weeks, however, they will face Liverpool and they will certainly not be a favorite in this confrontation. The Portuguese will then play against Diego Simeone’s charges, and the coveted second place in the event of a defeat by the “Rossoneri” may even give them a draw.
Another, fifth victory in the fifth game in the group was achieved by the aforementioned Ajax. So Beşiktaş still doesn’t have a single point on his account.
Sporting, on the other hand, made a big surprise. The team from Lisbon defeated Borussia Dortmund 3: 1 and currently has three points advantage over her. The promotion to the next phase is determined by the results in the direct tie, which means that the German Cup winners are saying goodbye to the Champions League. Sporting will play in the 1/8 finals for the first time since the 2008/2009 season.
Almost everything is clear now in Group D. After the defeat with Inter, Shakhtar Donetsk will definitely take the fourth place. Sheriff Tiraspol will take third place, and Real Madrid and the “Nerazzurri” will fight first in the match in a week’s time.
Manchester City has become the fourth English team to advance to the top sixteen of this year’s Champions League. The “Citizens” guaranteed themselves the game in February, beating Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 at home, although the French took the lead first. The goals of Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus made the runners-up in France finish second in the group. Third will be RB Leipzig, who smashed the Belgians 5: 0 and is four points behind the Parisians.
The last matches of the group stage will take place on December 7 and 8.
