China is threatening Poland’s neighbor – RMF 24

China is downgrading diplomatic relations with Lithuania and is threatening the consequences for the opening of a Taiwanese representative office in Vilnius. The United States promises Lithuania support in the face of Chinese pressure.

The Chinese are announcing a rematch for the decision of the Lithuanian authorities, which agreed to open a representative office in Vilnius Taiwan. Usually, such establishments are only called the representation of Taipei, the city that is the seat of the island’s government.

According to the Chinese authorities, the St. Vilnius it is the de facto embassy of the island that the Beijing government considers its territory as a rule “one china”.

The authorities in Beijing argue that such actions constitute interference in the internal affairs of their country. They openly declare that they do not want to allow a precedent that could encourage other countries to come closer to Taiwan.

Therefore, Chinese diplomacy not only withdraws the ambassador from Lithuania, but also threatens that the country will suffer the consequences of its – as the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls it – “doomed to failure” actions.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of it. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing all of China – reads the statement of the Beijing Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lithuanian authorities ensure that they respect the “one China” principle. At the same time, they defend their decisions and emphasize their will to develop economic cooperation with Taiwan. Our government program says that Lithuania wants stronger economic, cultural and scientific relations with Taiwan – Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte stated.

This cooperation is currently of exceptional importance because Taiwan it accounts for nearly two-thirds of the world’s semiconductor production, and industries worldwide are now suffering from an acute shortage of chips.

The Taipei government has said Beijing has no right to comment on Taiwan’s relationship with Lithuania. By the way, he pointed out that the Chinese communist authorities never exercised power over Taiwan and had no right to speak on its behalf.

Tension has been rising around the island recently. China is constantly testing the nerves of the Taiwanese army. Today, Taipei officials said two H-6 bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons appeared near the south of the island.

In the face of these demonstrations of power and the sharpening of Chinese rhetoric, the United States and some US allies reassure Taiwan of their support. This is met with a harsh reaction in Beijing. Recently, the editor-in-chief of a major party newspaper stated that if Australia in the event of an armed conflict, it will actively support Taiwan, and will be destroyed by China.

Conflict Lithuania with China has been growing for some time. Recently, the Lithuanian services published a report in which they recommended that not only Lithuanian but also European government officials should refrain from using Chinese telecommunications equipment.

Lithuania, like most Central European countries, has signed agreements with the United States clean net dealon telecommunications security. The result is caution against the Chinese offer to build a 5G network.

Also in Poland, there were voices that the amendment to the Act on national cybersecurity system directly against the interests of the Chinese company Huawei and may worsen relations with China.

United States support Lithuania in its dispute with China. The head of Lithuanian diplomacy, Gabrielius Landsbergis, is to visit Washington tomorrow, where, among other things, American financial support for the Baltic country is expected.

Lithuania was the first country to leave the 17 + 1 cooperation forum, which was attended by China plus seventeen Central European countries, turning the initiative into a 16 + 1 format.

According to many comments, Central European capitals are deeply disappointed in their cooperation with China. As The Diplomat recently commented, “instead of infrastructure, they got discussions, instead of factories, they were given exchange programs, and instead of exports, summer camps.”

It points to the moderate interest of Chinese companies in countries in this part of Europe. Flagship projects such as the construction of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in Romania and the Budapest-Belgrade high-speed railway have either been canceled or postponed.
