Coronavirus. A disturbing discovery about the Omikron variant

About 450 scientists around the world began urgent research into the Omikron variant, said a representative from the World Health Organization (WHO) last week. They aim to understand to what extent the latest mutation may be immune to coronavirus vaccination. In addition, scientists are investigating whether the virus’s transmission capacity has increased.

‘The detection of the Omikron variant in two fully vaccinated people, whose transmission took place in the corridor of the hotel where they were in quarantine, highlighted this potential concern,’ the Hong Kong researchers said in their study.

The number of COVID-19 cases has increased sharply in certain regions of South Africa over the past month, heralding a fourth pandemic wave dominated by the Omikron variant. Since the discovery of the new COVID-19 variant was reported by South African scientists, cases have been reported around the world.
