Costa Concordia shipwreck, the EU Court of Human Rights confirmed Schettino’s sentence

The Strasbourg judges have rejected the appeal against the sentence of 16 years of imprisonment, which the former commander of the Costa Concordia Francesco Schettino is serving.

The European Court of Human Rights confirmed the sentence of Francesco Schettino for the sinking of the Costa Concordia, in which 32 people lost their lives. The Strasbourg judges rejected the appeal against the sentence of 16 years’ imprisonment: “The Court judges, in the light of all the elements in its possession, that the facts reported do not reveal any apparent violation of rights and freedoms“, affirms the Court. The shipwreck in front of the island of Giglio took place on January 13, 2012. In 2018 the former commander’s lawyers had filed an appeal contesting a violation of his fundamental rights. They believed that the Italian sentences had weighed too much on the However, according to the ECHR, this is not the case.

For the European judge Alena Polackova there has been no violation. The same appeal was first presented also by the Court of Appeal of Genoa, but even in that case it was rejected. So Schettino’s lawyers had decided to turn to Strasbourg. In July, the lawyer Saverio Senese had presented a reminder regarding the appeal, which had been presented several years earlier.

However, there would be a missing piece. According to reports from the newspaper La Nazione, the European sentence would actually be dated January 13, 2022, the day on which the tenth anniversary of the shipwreck occurred. But, in fact, there would have been a delay in the delivery of the sentence. “Please communicate the details of the registered letter and the personal details of who would have collected it, on behalf and in the name of the undersigned, since I have not received any letter.“, the lawyer complained. In addition to these words, however, no comments from Schettino or his team on the sentence itself. The former commander therefore remains detained in Rebibbia prison since 2017.
