Crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, conversation between Angela Merkel and Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Jacek Czaputowicz comments

Former head of Polish diplomacy Jacek Czaputowicz said on TVN24 that the conversation between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenka about the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border “is undoubtedly in our interest”. – Poles are interested in solving the crisis, and not in who gets popularity points – he emphasized.

On Monday and Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke with Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka. The talks focused on the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki later commented that “direct talks with Lukashenka legitimize his regime.”

On Saturday, the guest of “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 was Jacek Czaputowicz, former foreign minister in the government of Mateusz Morawiecki.

Czaputowicz: the Merkel-Lukashenka conversation is in Poland’s interest

When asked about the conversation, Merkel-Lukashenka said that “it was a decision made by the chancellor.” – It is in the interest of Poland and Polish society. (…) This decision is undoubtedly in our interest – he said.

He stressed that the most important goal “is for the pressure at the border to end in order to resolve the humanitarian crisis.” – Poland has done a good job defending the border between Poland and the European Union – added Czaputowicz.

He stressed that Prime Minister Morawiecki “is also right that if the matters concern Poland, Poland should be informed about it.” “As far as we know, she was informed prior to the interview,” he said.

The interviewer, Piotr Marciniak, asked Czaputowicz if he agreed with the statements of right-wing journalists that Merkel wanted to “obscure Poland’s great success in defending the border”.

– I look at it differently, I look at real politics. Polish society is interested in the fact that there is no humanitarian crisis, that there is no pressure, that there is no threat to security. Not who gets the popularity points in the world. Whether it’s Chancellor Merkel, Putin, or Lukashenka, or Poland, replied the former minister.

He repeated that “Poland certainly deserves recognition, because it did defend the border, and for that, Polish services deserve gratitude.”

“The geopolitical situation is very bad for Poland”

According to Czaputowicz, “in general, the geopolitical situation is very bad for Poland.” – Lukashenka is increasingly dependent on Russia, on Vladimir Putin. It may end with the fact that where we want to build a wall, the border between the European Union and Russia, or a common state between Belarus and Russia, will become established – he said.

Such a division of Europe – he assessed – “would be very unfavorable”. – As a minister, I thought that Belarus should be kept in such a gray zone so that the European Union and Poland could influence what was happening there. But now it looks like Putin is the winner of this whole dispute – he said.

Czaputowicz emphasized that “human rights and the opposition in Belarus must be defended, but it could be done together with the European Union so that Poland would not be perceived by Lukashenka as the main enemy.”

Czaputowicz: first of all, it is necessary to block the flow of new migrants to Minsk

When asked what the Polish government should do about the crisis on the border, the TVN24 guest replied: – The next decisions that will have to be made include blocking the inflow of new migrants to Minsk and Belarus.

– I am a supporter of the position of the Polish Church, which makes us look at refugees as a human, dignity and humanitarian problem. I believe that it would be a nice gesture if Poland also contributed to solving the crisis not only of security and borders, but also of the humanitarian crisis. Is it through the participation of our organizations in Belarus, or perhaps considering assistance in the relocation of those refugees who will be granted asylum – he said.

The former minister added that you have to be careful with the language so as not to offend individual people. .

He also stressed that “Belarus is a member of the United Nations and it is primarily responsible for resolving this issue.” – But if, for example, the European Union allocates EUR 700,000 to help, it is a good gesture – he said.
