European Union Representation in Belarus: Flights for migrants are organized by Iraq

“We have information that today there will be two flights to Erbil (the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan). The EU does not finance these repatriation flights. The current repatriation activities are organized by the Iraqi authorities and only they are competent to reply to hours and other details repatriation flights for Iraqi citizens who are stuck in Belarus, “the EU Delegation to Belarus said in a press release.

“We support these and other actions by the Iraqi authorities to rescue and protect Iraqi citizens from abuses by criminal and people smuggling organizations” – it was indicated.

On Thursday morning, Belarusian authorities announced that the Iraqi plane did not come to Minsk because “the EU did not pay for the flight”. A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that he found out about it “from the media”.

Alyaksandr Lukashenka also spoke about the fact that the plane did not come, because “they did not send the plane”. He indicated that the flights “should be paid by the EU”.

In the afternoon, the Minsk airport announced that on Thursday evening and on Thursday night, two planes were to fly to Iraq, and those who wanted to return to the country would be taken on board. Similar information was provided to the media by the Iraqi consul in Moscow, staying at the Minsk airport.

Belarusian media reports that several hundred people who “want to return to Iraq” are currently waiting at the airport in Minsk. However, it has been established that at least some of these people were detained on Thursday and taken to the airport. At the airport, they are in an “isolated area” guarded by police officers.

A week ago, about 400 people were on board Iraqi Airways’ first repatriation flight from Minsk; the plane first landed in Erbil, where most of the passengers had disembarked, and then in Baghdad. Some people return to Iraq at their own expense, e.g. with a stopover in Dubai.

The West accuses Belarus of artificially creating a crisis by supplying migrants with visas in retaliation for the sanctions imposed on Minsk. The Belarusian authorities reject these accusations.
