Get ready to return to Arrakis! Dune fans rejoice, as the sequel is already in the works.

Dune was initially released in October 2021 and was not only a hit with fans, but also with critics. The Oscar-nominated film starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya was a box office success, earning more than $ 400 million worldwide. The film’s immediate success led to the sequel being confirmed shortly thereafter.

Denis Villeneuve will return to direct the second film. In March 2022, he revealed that the script was “mostly” finished.

“But it’s always a work in progress,” Villeneuve said in an interview with Collider at the time. “It will be a work in progress until the final editing, but I must say that it has consolidated. I have a script in my hands. We are in preparation right now. My crew, we are in full preparation for the film ”.

According to Villeneuve, Dune, based on the science fiction novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, always had to be split into two films. Chalamet, 26, plays the film’s hero, Paul Atreides, while Zendaya, 25, plays Chani, her future love interest. The cast is completed by Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin and Stephen McKinley Henderson.

Zendaya’s role in the first part of the franchise was minimal and left viewers wanting more. Fortunately, the wishes of the Dune fandom seem to come true!

“For Zendaya, I’ll say the first part was a promise. I know we saw her in the first part, but in the second part she will have an important part, ”Villeneuve told Variety in an interview in March 2022.“ We will follow Timothée and Zendaya on their adventures in the desert. This is the thing that excited me the most about going back to Arrakis is spending time with those characters again ”.

Zendaya also hinted at developing her storyline with Deadline in November 2021. “Anyone who has read the books knows there’s a lot more to explore and tackle,” she said at the time.

In the same interview, Chalamet expressed his excitement to return to the set. “We were ready to do it then [when we wrapped Part One]. This story is far from over, ”she joked.

Although most are destined to return, Isaac, 43, will not be one of them after his character dies. However, two new characters will be introduced: Princess Irulan and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Florence Pugh and Austin Butler are in talks to play those potential roles, but nothing has been officially confirmed.

While Dune: Part One had a theatrical release on the same day and HBO Max, Part 2 will have an exclusive theatrical release. However, it has not yet been confirmed when it will arrive on streaming platforms.
