A nice revenge for Matteo Giupponi in the 35 km walk. Triumphal day for the Orobic colors because in the female Federica Curiazzi finished fourth and Lidia Barcella sixth always in the 35 km.
Matteo Giupponi, 33 years from Villa d’Almè (registered for the Carabinieri with whose uniform, this year, he took the absolute Italian title on distance with personal best at 2h33’45 “) won bronze in the European Championships in Munich in the 35Km walk with a time of 2: 30.34behind the unstoppable Spaniard Miguel Angel Lopez, gold in 2h26: 49 and the German Christopher Linke who takes the silver in 2h29: 30.
Giupponi’s decisive action for third place came when there were six kilometers left: the 33-year-old from the Carabinieri, up to that moment fourth, managed to overtake the Spaniard Manuel Bermudez (at the foot of the podium with 2h32: 31). For the man from Bergamo, sentimentally linked to the blue walker Eleonora Giorgi and soon to be a father, she is the first international career medal at an absolute level, after having highlighted in the past seasons also in the 20 km, finishing eighth at the Rio Games in 2016. «It was a tough race, but it is a great satisfaction, after 7 years of fatigue due to a tendon injury. I have to thank my girlfriend and everyone who has been close to me in these difficult years for being able to return to great levels. A medal arrived at 33, I’m happy“.
To complete the Italian and Bergamo party the fourth place of Federica Curiazzi 30 year old from Barzana (Atl. Bergamo 59 Oiocenter) and the sixth of Lidia Barcella 25 years of Villa di Serio.
