For a year of the new generation, Xbox has shown that it can take care of players

Over a week ago, we had a really big celebration at the Microsoft camp, when it comes to the segment related to the video game industry. First of all, we are currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Xbox, which was of course celebrated with a lot of various elements for video games, prizes and flooded us with interesting announcements. Secondly, a year has passed since the premiere of the new generation of consoles.

Recently, I wrote some of my thoughts on the first twelve months of PlayStation 5 on the market (the text can be found here and I invite you to read it). Now, however, I would also like to take a look at what it looked like “on the other side of the barricade”, i.e. in the Xbox world. Sony and Microsoft started almost at the same time (with a difference of a few days) and you can definitely put them together.

However, I am not going to play with comparing what is better and what is worse here. After all, it is best to have both consoles, and the worst to not have either. And that’s it. I would like it simply summarize the first year of the Xbox X | S on the market and how it coped. And the only thing I will compare these months to will be the start of the Xbox One, which took place years ago. Because that’s the best way to see progress.

Something for everyone

Let’s start from the beginning – Xbox took off in two variants. And in my opinion it was a very good decision. Sure, releasing two versions of the hardware, with and without a drive, seemed to be a matter of course. However, Microsoft went a step further and implemented more differences that shared the Xbox Series X (stronger console) and the Xbox Series S (weaker brother). First and foremost, of course, it’s about performance and power.

Xbox Series X

XSX gives us the feeling of a true next generation in every sense of the word, and XSS seems to be something that could be described as a “half measure”. A fantastic option for those who want to start their adventure with Microsoft, they don’t have cosmic demands, or they just can’t afford to throw over 2,500 zlotys on a video game device. After all, the price was also a significant difference.

What resulted in it? A much larger base of interested parties. Sunday players could enter the new generation with one foot, taking the Xbox Series S at a really favorable rate. Microsoft has won the sympathy of many people and has shown that it intends to take care of the growing community. They attracted a lot of players and proved right from the start that they do not intend to limit themselves to the biggest fans.

“Game Pass King”

Of course, you cannot write about the Xbox and at the same time remain silent on the topic of probably the greatest innovation of the previous generation – subscription to games. The Greens showed how it’s done. They came in from an underdog position, a bit of a side entrance, and then they ran and hung the bar so high now it’s hard for anyone to jump to it. You can shout at this aspect, but it will be extremely stupid to criticize the Game Pass initiative from the player’s perspective.

Game Pass

For a relatively small price (and by buying from promotion to promotion, even for half free), we get access to a colossal library of games – from the greatest classics, through new products from the AAA segment, to medium-sized productions and independent titles that we would not normally recognize (and gems there are a lot of them). And even if Xbox could have stayed with what it was a year ago, this over the past months they have developed the service even further.

Month after month, subscribers get better and louder games, the biggest XGS premieres (such as Forza Horizon 5 or Halo Infinite) make their debut in the service on the day of the launch, and other publishers themselves apply to Microsoft to join the family of productions, which are available in the form of a subscription. It speaks for itself. I do not believe that owners of the Xbox Series X or Series S can be bored today and complain about the lack of games.

New games? Be careful with that!

And if we’re already complaining about the lack of games. While in the general sense of these words it is not appropriate to complain, in terms of novelty, unfortunately, it is a bit like that. The muscles of the Xbox have only recently started flexing, and a series of great productions – from Psychonauts 2, through Forza Horizon 5, to the upcoming Halo Infinite – definitely bodes well. Nevertheless, for a long time it was in vain to look for new system-exclusive hits.

Forza Horizon 5

So if someone bought the XSX | S for checking the news and experiences straight from a new generationyou might have felt a bit disappointed. The first year was somewhat worn-out, and the Game Pass mentioned in the last paragraph was effective in helping this out. It acted like Netflix when theaters were closed due to the pandemic. It complemented, was a minimal substitute, but did not fully reflect the emotions we expected.

However, taking into account the assurances and purchases made by Microsoft over the past years, you can look to the future through rose-colored glasses. We already know about a few hits that are headed for Xbox, and a lot is likely being made behind the scenes right now. So, while it is vain to speak of a harvest in this respect, the first year definitely sparked promise and whetted the appetite for more. I think 2022 will be crucial.

In sum…

Do you know what is most fair to judge anything / anyone for? For progress and learning from past mistakes. In the case of the Xbox, this is definitely a plus. Although the premiere of the previous generation took place quite a long time ago, I still remember that then the atmosphere was completely different. You could get the impression that after the success of the Xbox 360, soda water hit some people’s heads.

The humility has disappeared somewhere, a they kind of forgot that it’s all about the players. The solutions felt more corporate, and the presentation behavior was repulsive rather than encouraging. Now everything was completely different – specific issues had definitely been worked through over the years, and Phil Spencer proved that he was the right man, in the right position.

This is by far a successful year and Xbox has proven to be still a significant player in the market. And although in terms of sales, it is still not the success it deserves for the last months of operations, it undoubtedly stole the hearts of many players. Was it perfect? In no case. However, everything is going for the better and everyone who owns the new Xbox can be optimistic about the future.
