Harry Potter: Dobby’s Tomb May Be Removed From Beach in Wales Over Fans’ Reasons

Memorial is located in Freshwater West, where the tragic death of the house-elf who for years served the Malfoy family was recorded.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 premiered in 2011, thus ending the successful film franchise that, since 2001, had been adapting the book collection written by J.K. Rowling. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) had their happy ending after destroying the seven Horcruxes and their owner, Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). However, not everyone managed to survive the war between good and evil, one of them being the house elf Dobby (originally voiced by Toby Jones).

First introduced in The Chamber of Secrets (2002), this little more than four feet, bulging eyes and floppy ears has become one of the most beloved characters in the wizarding world. No wonder he received a beautiful tribute from fans in Wales: a grave on Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire, where Dobby’s tragic death was filmed. For those who don’t remember the tragic moment, the creature ended up hit by Bellatrix Lestrange’s (Helena Bonham Carter) dagger and died in Harry’s arms.

Harry Potter: Why did the little wizard get that name? JK Rowling reveals intimate reason for choice

It turns out that the memorial can be removed from its current address – and for a very unusual reason: the potterheads are filling up much of the sand with socks and colored pebbles that contain messages for Dobby. It is worth remembering that, in history, house elves only get their freedom when they receive a piece of clothing from their masters. That’s why Harry stuffed a sock into a Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs) book without him noticing, to later give it to Dobby as a sign of manumission.

According to the National Trust – the body responsible for the conservation of historical and natural heritage in England, Wales and Northern Ireland – the area dedicated to the character is under greater pressure now. Therefore, the institution decided to commission an opinion poll to find out whether the tombstone should remain or be transferred to a more suitable and accessible place for the public. In all, there are 30 questions about the beach, including some about traffic, parking and sanitary facilities.

“In recent years, we’ve seen an increase in the number of visitors wanting to experience all that Freshwater West has to offer,” the National Trust said in a statement (via BBC). “We love having people on site and want visitors to have a pleasant and safe experience, ensuring that this special landscape is cared for for generations to come,” he continued.

“Feedback is ongoing to help us understand the issues more deeply and consider sustainable options for the future of Freshwater West.”

The survey can be completed until the 31st of May. Check out images of the tribute to Dobby below:
