Bring your head back into play? More than a decade after the first High School Musical movie aired on the Disney Channel, Zac Efron has revealed that he is willing to wear his he Wildcats uniform once again.
“Sure, sure,” the 17 Again star told E! News in May 2022 when asked if she would consider reprising the role of her for a future High School Musical reboot. “I mean, having the opportunity in any form to go back and work with that team would be great. My heart is still there. It would be unbelievable. I hope that happens “.
The beloved Disney Channel Original Movie centers on Troy, a high school basketball star who meets shy and beautiful mathelete Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) while singing karaoke during the winter holidays. When Gabriella ends up moving to Troy High School, East High in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the couple threatens to overturn the school’s status quo when she decides to audition for the school’s annual musical. But to land the role, they’ll have to beat resident theater kids Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel) and get their best friends Chad (Corbin Bleu) and Taylor (Monique Coleman) to try new things.
High School Musical spawned two sequels, released in 2007 and 2008 respectively, and was the inspiration for the Disney Channel series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which premiered in November 2019.
While Efron may be interested in returning to East High, some of his co-stars are more hesitant. “I just feel like I wouldn’t be able to do it again and do it justice,” Tisdale told Entertainment Tonight in August 2021 of Sharpay’s role again. “Do you know what I’m saying? I think at that moment I was very unaware of myself and my surroundings, and I feel this is an important part of Sharpay. It just isn’t really aware of it, so as I’ve grown and become more aware, I think it’s just something that wouldn’t be the same. “
He continued: “It’s so beautiful, and it’s like, to me, I’d hate to spoil something that’s perfect for that moment, and yes, I don’t think I could go back.”
Three months later, Hudgens shared similar feelings about a fourth High School Musical film with the outlet. “It was such a beautiful moment in time that so many people hold each other so close, close and dear to their hearts, that I don’t know [if I’d return]”He told ET in November 2021.“ It’s scary to mess with something like this, because it’s so loved. Someone has to write a script and send it to all of us, and if we like it, who knows? “
