Johnny Depp apparently walked away from his Virginia libel trial with the upper hand in the legal fight against his ex-wife Amber Heard. But he claimed that the jury got the verdict wrong and filed an appeal, which he followed up with him. Now, he has hired a new “confident” lawyer to take over from one of his most prominent attorneys.
Amber Heard owes Johnny Depp more than $ 10 million
During the weeks of their highly publicized libel trial, Depp and Heard filed their cases against each other. Depp sued Heard for $ 50 million and she responded for $ 100 million. He claimed that he lied about the domestic violence he perpetrated on her and damaged her career in doing so. Furthermore, she accused her of being the abusive partner in their marriage while she asserted her innocence.
Meanwhile, Heard has claimed that Depp was abusive during their relationship. Although he never mentioned him in the Washington Post editorial at the center of her case against her, he defended her word in court. She said the essay she wrote with the help of the ACLU was partly about Depp and claimed that he only scratched the surface of what he endured.
Eventually, the jury decided that each had vilified the other to some degree, but found that Heard was wrong in all three claims against her. She was ordered to pay more than $ 10 million in damages, which was reduced from $ 15 million due to a cap on punitive premiums in the state.
Meanwhile, Depp owes Heard $ 2 million for a statement the jury found defamatory of three of his claims.
Amber Heard has a new lawyer for her appeal and Elaine Bredehoft will step down
One of the attorneys alongside Heard during the trial was Elaine Bredehoft. She made a name for herself by fighting with opposing attorneys and witnesses, even accusing a former TMZ employee of chasing her fame while she was interrogating.
Since receiving the verdict, Heard has said the outcome was not in the service of the interests of justice and has filed an appeal. And Bredehoft is now resigning to make way for a new consultant to handle upcoming trials.
According to Deadline, Heard’s new attorneys released a statement that read: “We are confident that the appeals court will apply the law correctly without deference to popularity, overturn the sentence against Ms. Heard and reaffirm the fundamental principles of freedom of word”.
Johnny Depp also appealed the sentence against him
After Heard filed an appeal, Depp did the same. His lawyer, Camille Vasquez, explained the decision during an interview with Gayle King CBS morning
“Mr. Depp ended up filing his own appeal so that the court could have the full record, ”he explained. “… [Heard] insists on continuing litigation on this matter and we must protect our client’s interest ”.
“… As his representative, we must respond to the appeal with his own appeal,” Vasquez added, noting that the trial “was never about money” for Depp.
