In 2018, 10 percent of the club’s shares were bought by the San Francisco 49ers. In November this year, they acquired another shares, increasing their ownership to 44 percent. They have the option to buy the rest of the shares, and this would make them the sole owner of Leeds United. The closing of the deal would cost the San Francisco 49ers over £ 500m.

CEO Andrea Radrizzani remains the majority shareholder, however, and his company, Aser, has the option to cancel the deal. In that case, the San Francisco 49ers company would not acquire any more shares in the club.
