Europe continues to insist on the need for to reduce the consumption to cope with the dear-energy of the Old Continent. With respect to the measures put on the table, however, the EU Ministers have advanced a counter-proposal regarding the peak hours on which to apply the cuts.

Electricity cut: the new request for the EU

According to the new draft compromise put forward by the Ministers of the European Union and reported by ANSA, counter-proposals have been made on the issue of electricity cuts required to cope with expensive energy.

In particular, the ministers would have asked to impose less stringent limits on the so-called peak hours, chosen for the mandatory cut in consumption. The same are necessary for the calculation of the solidarity contributions for energy companies.

Italy and Europe are struggling with expensive energy

Compared to what was requested by the Commission (i.e. 10% of the monthly hours), governments ask instead to cover at least the 7% of peak hours regarding the period between December 2022 and March 2023.

New also for extra profits

It is not the only measure that is aimed at revising in view of the forthcoming provisions against expensive energy at European level.

The same source, in fact, reports that the draft would also include the request to reshape the extra profits of fossil companies. We aim to calculate them on the basis of 4 years of profitsstarting in 2018.

In the original intentions of Brussels, however, the calculation on these profits increased by the increase in the cost of electricity and gas would have to be done considering the period 2019-2021.

EU measures against expensive energy

All of this is part of the delicate and urgent framework regarding expensive energy, largely due to the situation Russian-Ukrainian and the difficult relations with the Kremlin.

In recent days it has emerged that the European Union is moving towards the compulsory cut in electricity consumption: the package that Brussels is preparing to launch should include the reduction of electricity demand, taxation on extra-profits and solidarity contributions for companies that work with fossil fuels.

Nothing to do instead for the price cap on which both the Premier Draghi than the President Sergio Mattarella. If the counter-proposal passes, EU countries will have to decide at what hours to implement the 7% electricity cut, instead of the proposed 10%.

  • F3 (off peak hours): Mon-Sat from 11.00pm to 7.00am, Sundays and holidays all day
