The number of cases of COVID-19 in children is increasing, and although the course of the disease in children last year was milder than in adults, this time we are dealing with new variants of the coronavirus. Omicron and delta contributed to an increase in the number of children with much more severe symptoms. As we wrote in one of the articles, in the USA with the advent of Delta, the number of hospitalized children increased fivefold, and in Canada in November, people under the age of 12 constituted the largest number of patients.

Dr. Łukasz Przysło from the Department of Developmental Neurology and Epileptology at the Institute of “Polish Mother’s Health Center” in Łódź spoke about the serious consequences of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in an interview with TVN24. The doctor explained how the infection can lead to ischemic stroke, also in the youngest. Research has proven that SARS-CoV-2 is a coronavirus that exhibits neurotropism, i.e. the ability to penetrate the nerve tissues of the brain. According to the expert, serious complications can also occur in children who have had COVID-19 asymptomatically.

The expert explained that the inflamed blood vessels swell, which may consequently obstruct blood flow. Just such ailment occurred in three young patients of the Institute of “Polish Mother’s Health Center” in Lodz, who, although suffering from COVID-19 asymptomatically, soon after struggled with the symptoms of ischemic stroke – a disease that has so far affected mainly adults.
