LECCE – Assault with high-charge explosives at ATMs and postamat counters in the areas of Avellino, Benevento and Rome. Also a Salento among the nine recipients of the precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the Avellino Court, at the request of the local Public Prosecutor’s Office. The measures were carried out by the carabinieri of the provincial command of the city of Irpinia against nine individuals (most of whom from Foggia), held responsible for the crimes of criminal association aimed at the manufacture, port and receipt of explosives and damage to ATMs.
Measures – seven in prison and two under house arrest – one against a man dthe Monteroni di Lecce, about forty years old and several precedents behind them. At the moment, however, it would be untraceable and the Weapon investigators are looking for it. According to the reconstruction carried out during the investigation, the Salento suspect would have played the role of intermediary within the organization. He would therefore have worked to identify useful contacts for the procurement of “work tools”, such as the cars to be used in the shots. He was ordered to be transferred to his cell, but at the moment he is abroad. The other measures were notified in the territories of Foggia and Beneventoe, one in Palermo where a suspect is currently being held in the local prison. The associates of the group were therefore connected and connected from various parts of southern Italy, united by business of the assaults.
The investigative activity was started two years ago. Between July 2020 and January 2021, the group allegedly perpetrated six blows in the area of central southern Italy, using the same modus operandi: that of the so-called “marmot”. It is an elongated tool used to “inject” explosives into the edges of banks’ coffers. By causing it to explode, it was therefore easy to steal the banknotes and escape. In some cases the explosion proved powerful enough to invalidate the plan: the money was destroyed. Once the target was chosen and the basista contacted, just before taking action, the suspects used to procure stolen vehicles, which they would then abandon after the assaults. And this is what the members of the group stopped by the men of the operational section in the past few hours have done.
